Temples of Baalbek, Baalbeck

Must see · World heritage site · Ruin · Religious Site
Discover prime examples of Imperial Roman architecture at Temples of Baalbek. Colossal columns, intricately detailed stonework, and the integrity and authenticity of its sanctuaries have earned the complex the status of a World Heritage Site. See the delicately carved Corinthian capitals on the Bacchus temple, roof sculptures representing Mark Anthony and Cleopatra, and lions heads on Jupiter's temple. The ancient city started out as a Phoenician sanctuary dedicated to a triad of deities, thrived under the name of Heliopolis during Hellenistic and Roman periods, and reached its peak under the Roman Empire. It suffered a lot of damage over the centuries--from earthquakes, Christian iconoclasts, and Muslim rulers. The stones of the temples were reused many times in the construction of fortification walls and other structures.
