Riga Cathedral, Riga

4.2
At Riga Cathedral, see the famous Dome organ--the largest organ in the world at the time of its construction in the late 19th century. Bishop Albert of Riga built the church in the 13th century as archbishop's seat. The rooster on the top of the Baroque clock tower is a guardian of the Christian faith. The largest medieval church in the Baltic states, its appearance has changed many times. Walk around the cloisters to see the original foundations. The church also serves as a concert hall and showcases internationally renowned choirs. • The Luterana Doma Cathedral was built in 1211, by Albrecht von Buxthoeven. It is considered the largest medieval church in the Baltic states. The organ was built by the company EF Walcker & Sons in 1882-83, and was inaugurated on 31 January 1884. The organ has 4 manual keyboards and a pedal keyboard, with 7000 tubes. It is considered the third largest tubular organ in the world. During the day there are several concerts of religious music taking advantage of the good acoustics of the temple. The red brick construction stands out in the square in which it is inserted.

  • Riga Cathedral is a very peaceful place to visit. Massive building of worship in the heart of Riga old town surrounded by people watching in nearby cafes
  • The most impressive Baltic cathedral, which shows its layers of history starting the Catholic German knights beginnings to the advent of Protestantism and the transformations henceforth. It is still active church, but it can be visited and hosts a very rich museum.
