Tamgaly Tas, Kapchagay

#1 of 6 in Things to do in Kapchagay
Landmark · Tourist Spot
Ponder over large enigmatic drawings at Tamgaly Tas, an ancient carved-stone World Heritage Site featuring some 5,000 petroglyphs dating from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. An open-air gallery of rock drawings, the gorge features images of animals and scenes of everyday life from the period, as well as images of Buddha and prayers carved in Tibetan, Kalmyk, and other languages. Distributed along several smaller canyons, petroglyphs can be found in several burial mounds and tombs showing life scenes of pastoral people. Go prepared to hike--the main rocks are a 15-minute walk from the nearest parking. Put Tamgaly Tas on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Kapchagay trip planner.
