Trip Planner:   Asia  /  Kazakhstan  /  Almaty  /  Ascension Cathedral

Ascension Cathedral, Almaty

Must see · Church · Tourist Spot
Located in Panfilov Park, Ascension Cathedral represents a rare religious structure made entirely out of wood, without any nails or metal components. Built in the late 19th century, the tall cathedral was used as a museum after the Communist revolution, but the Russian Orthodox Church restored its original purpose and publically reopened it in 1997. Explore the lavish Tardis-like interior assembled by artists and carpenters from Moscow and Kiev, and absorb the atmosphere infused with quiet religious chants and burned incense. Inspect the sacred relics and frescoes, along with elaborate gold and pearl paintings of the Virgin Mary. Respect the dress code during your visit. • Resplendent! Glorious! Heart quaking! The inside is just as powerful as the outside. Quiet, serene, and tranquil. #1 thing to see in Almaty. The surrounding park is also nice with amazing statues throughout.
  • It's a very beautiful orthodox cathedral. Many followers come here to pray. The park outside is also beautiful suitable for a walk and family activities.
