Jōmon Sugi, Yakushima-cho

A Japanese cedar thousands of years old, Jōmon Sugi has been named a World Heritage Site. Standing at 1,280 m (4,200 ft) above sea level, it is also the largest tree on the island and is often a central part of a solid day's hike in the Yakushima Mountains. If trees could talk, this 30 m tall (100 ft) Jomon cedar would tell a history of the world since the Stone Age. Take a guess at its age--scientists believe it to be between 2,600 and 7,200 years old. • We left the hotel early in the morning and climbed the mountain for 10 hours. The first 2.5 hours are relatively flat trolleys, but in the second half it's a fairly hard climb. We asked a guide, and we were able to climb the mountain while listening to various stories about the nature of Yakushima, and how to enjoy it, so we were distracted, but because of the monotonous path of some kind, we are physically and mentally exhausted. It is nowonder to say that there are a certain number of people who retire on the way.

  • It is a one-way road of the total of the trolley road, and the mountain path. The guide explained a lot of details, so it was a good guide. It took ten and a half hours to get back and forth. The altitude is not high, but please face it with the consciousness to train the lower back on a daily basis.
