Usuki Sekibutsu, Usuki

#1 of 39 in Things to do in Usuki
Must see · Monument · Tourist Spot
Perched on a cliff in the woods, Usuki Sekibutsu features a series of 12th-century Buddha statues carved out of soft volcanic stones, and provides a magnificent spot to ponder and look out over vast farmlands below. A walk on the paved trail leading around these well-preserved stone Buddhas, divided into four clusters, takes about 30 minutes. During festival time, the complex lights up with lanterns while local dancers perform to the beat of taiko drummers. You can reach the site by taking a 20-minute bus ride from Usuki railway station.
