#235 of 422 in Museums in Tokyo
Travel through the Nara and early Heian periods of Japanese history at The Gallery of Horyuji Treasures. The gallery's refined and minimalist structure instills calm in every visitor, which was exactly the intention of its creator--the acclaimed Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi. As you approach the asymmetrical main facade, you'll see its reflection in a shallow pool of water. The gallery building was completed in 1999 to serve as the space for nearly 300 valuable pieces of Buddhist art and culture donated by Horyuji Temple in Nara, including gigaku masks, gilt bronze statues, calligraphy, painting, and textiles. A digital archive on the second floor contains explanations in Japanese, Chinese, Korean, English, French, and German. Start your trip to Tokyo by creating a personalized itinerary on Inspirock.
