  • A solid middle-of-the-road ryokan. Though good, it's actually not great, but the reason I'm giving it 4 stars is that the water at Matsunoyama is just amazing. It's natural hot spring water but it's subtle enough that the sulfur aroma isn't overwhelming, yet powerful enough that it really feels like it rejuvenates the skin. I think it's the best water of any hot spring I've been to in Japan so far, and I've been all over the country. This particular ryokan has both public and private baths, and the private bath doesn't need a reservation (you just lock the door). The rooms are comfortable and the town is interesting and low-key.
  • It was midsummer, but it is a hot spring inn with very good spring quality. The food was full and the hospitality was excellent. If I have a chance, I would like to use it again.
