Nestled among the lush forest mountain landscape, Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine ranks among the most renowned Shinto shrines in Japan. Leading to the sanctuary stands the entrance gate and a stone stairway of 158 steps. Before entering, purchase an amulet inscribed with a deity, and cleanse your mouth and hands at the temizuya, or pavillion for water ablution. Inside the main shrine features 14 deities, which visitors worship according to the simple prayer manners and customs. Find enshrined the image of the deity Ketsumimiko-O-kami, made from a torreya tree dating back to the 9th century. Numerous festivals occur throughout the year. • This is one of my favorite sacred sites in all of Japan! There is something distinctly whimsical about the ornate shrine buildings nestled among trees on top of a hill, deep in the mountains. Not easy to get to, but definitely worth the trip!
  • We've been here in late January 2020 and there was still excitement for the new year of the mouse. We didn't find it crowded so we could spend some good time walking around in this beautiful environment and making some wishes to the shrines
