Step back into the distant past and visit the ancient Haruna Shrine, built in the sixth century. Sitting about halfway up Mt. Hurana, one of the three mountains of Jomo, the shrine is dedicated to the gods of fire, water, and agriculture. Its main gateway slowly reveals itself as you make your way up hill, gaining an ever-expanding view over the horizon. The gate's east-west orientation results in the sun providing an amazing effect by either shining through it from behind, or by illuminating the structure’s face. Follow paved and dirt paths throughout the shrine to come across various cultural and religious icons. Probably one of my absolute favourite Shinto Shrines to visit though it is quite far from Takasaki Station and you don't want to miss the bus ride back. When you go, take special notice of all the detailed wooden carvings.
Beautiful walk through nature with shrines tucked into the mountains. I’ve never seen anything like it before, wonderful experience.
