With snow-white sands imported from Australia and two of the oldest hot springs in Japan, Shirarahama Beach remains a major attraction in a popular seaside resort. The town began importing sand from Australia in 1989, as the area's coastline began to erode. Today, you can take a stroll along 640 m (2,099 ft) of sweeping soft sand, stopping at two hot springs. The beach can get very busy, so arrive early to get a good spot. Add Shirarahama Beach and other attractions to your Shirahama-cho trip itinerary using our Shirahama-cho road trip planner.

  • Absolutely gorgeous beach. The sand is imported from Australia and doesn’t feel coarse at all. I visited during the winter so there was no possibility of going into the ocean water. However, the beach is very clean and the water is clear as well! This a must visit if you’re in the area.
  • Had a great time here. It was really nice to see a beach with lifeguards and garbage cans (I go to beaches all over Japan and it's a first). Really had that vacation feel to the place and offered up a lot to do even if the beach isn't your thing. Pretty good food nearby and decent snorkeling as well. Can't wait to go back.
