Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Shinjuku

4.6
#1 of 8,346 in Parks in Japan
Originally constructed for the private residence of "daimyo" (feudal lord) Naito in the Edo period, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden has served as a public park under the Ministry of the Environment since its reconstruction after World War II. Tour the park to see its three main sections: a traditional Japanese garden dotted with ponds intercepted by islands and bridges; a symmetrically planned French garden; and an English garden with sweeping lawns and cherry blossom trees. Stop by the greenhouse to inspect the permanent and special exhibits of tropical flowers. • On a sunny Sunday afternoon, my wife and I went there. Many people visited the place of relaxation spreading to the center of tokyo, and there were not a lot of foreigners, too. It entered from The Ogito gate, and it took a rest at the rest place in front of the restaurant, and it came out from shinjuku gate in the rest place in front of the restaurant around the pond of the pond of the old Misuzutei → The japanese garden → the pond on and around, and it came out from shinjuku gate through the forest of mother and the child. There were some highlights that i skipped in the garden bigger than I imagined, but the stay was more than two hours. The temperature was very high on this day and i was able to refresh myself comfortably.

  • Even though we missed the cherry blossom season, this park is beautiful. There's a small lake, many great trees and a traditional Japanese garden inside.  more »

  • Great open garden in the bustling Shinjuku precinct surrounded by several fish ponds, encircled by skyscrapers. I visited during the chrysanthemum exhibition in autumn and the multitude of colours of flowers and trees were dazzling. Many locals come here to enjoy the fresh air and space, exercise, painting, even for weddings.
  • Very nice and peaceful park. Even being in the middle of all the tall buildings it still quiet and away from the city noise. Everything is pretty and very well maintained. I just enjoy walking around and resting here. I love it.
