Shimabara Castle, Shimabara

3.7
Take in the imposing walls of Shimabara Castle, a 17th-century fortification framed by blossoming trees and complete with moat, watchtowers, and keep. Pose for pictures with staff in costumes from the Edo period when you enter, and then move on to inspect the array of artifacts and tools in the keep museum, which traces the history of this complex and its politics. You'll have opportunities to dress up yourself as a samurai warrior. Prepare to navigate many stairs within the keep, but panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside reward your efforts. • It was a very nice castle. Larger than I would have expected for a town the size of Shimabara. The interior has been converted into a museum with a focus on the fight between the local Christian faction and more traditional Japanese beliefs.
  • Nice castle which explains the history of the castle and the persecution of Christians during that time.
