#1 of 387 in Museums in Tohoku
Join the crowds paying their respects at Zuihoden, the mausoleum of the city's founder and his ancestors. During your visit to the city, you'll hear the name Date Masamune--the feudal samurai lord much revered for founding the city--so a trip to this hilltop mausoleum and museum helps in understanding what the lord achieved and why he has come to be held in such high esteem. The main buildings of the mausoleum complex date from 1637; after destruction by Allied bombing during World War II, they were rebuilt in 1979 in their original ornamental Momoyama style. • If you have about three hours left at Sendai Station, you might want to go there. It can be reached by bus or taxi. Walk outside for about 30 minutes, so be careful of the weather. There is also free parking, locker rooms and free umbrellas. Because it is a slope such as stairs, it might be severe for the person with bad legs.

  • We will climb a steep slope from the parking lot. There is a cane in the parking lot. If you're worried, you might want to take a taxi to the middle of the hill. The building was very colorful and looked like a small Toshogu shrine. The signboard of the guide was easy to understand, and it was easy to see.

  • Very beautiful and green area. Could be a nice walk. The road walking up to the entrance is a bit of hilly. The temple is beautifully designed with amazing details and carvings.
  • This was pretty good. I enjoyed visiting this locating more than the castle ruins. It's arelatively easy 40 minute walk from Sendai station. However, the last 400m will be strenuous for some due to the steep incline, partly stepped and partly flat incline. The location is relatively small but there is detail here, history. Sign boards are in Japanese and English. The small museum has interesting artefacts - mostly documented in Japanese, with English titles. The buildings are ornate. The location is pleasant and peaceful. There is meaning here. Entry fee of ¥550 per adult was worth the visit.
