Aoba Castle is a Japanese castle located in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Throughout the Edo period, Aoba Castle was home to the Date clan, daimyō of Sendai Domain. The castle was also known as Sendai-jō or as Gojō-rō. In 2003, the castle site was designated a National Historic Monument.DesignAoba Castle is located on a plateau overlooking the city of Sendai on the opposing bank of the Hirose River. The site is protected by cliffs to the south and east, and by a deep forest to the west. This forest was strictly guarded in the Edo period and is a rare survivor of the original virgin forests in Honshu. The area is now managed as a botanical garden by Tohoku University. While the natural defenses of the castle were extensive, the man-made defensive structures of the castle were minimal, as its role was more administrative and ceremonial than military.HistoryThe site of Aoba Castle, a small hill called “Mount Aoba” was the site of a fortified residence of a branch of the Shimazu clan, the nominal kokushi of Mutsu Province from the early Kamakura period. In the Muromachi period, it was controlled by the Ji-samurai Kokubun clan, which was in turn destroyed by the Date clan.

  • It's worth going to see the view of the town, but I don't think there's all that much you could call a "castle" at the spot. I saw a VR museum (I'm guessing that's just a VR recreation of the castle.....  more »
  • As the castle was burned down during the Meiji Era, you can only enjoy the remains of the whole huge complex. But, the view from the top is worth the walk and the stone statue of the famous lord...  more »
  • It is a tourist attraction place. The view from the top is awesome. There is shopping area where you can enjoy Sendai’s popular deserts. There is a temple as well. You can get there by bus or by your car. Date Masamune’s statue is worth to see.
  • Good views of Sendai. Easy 50 minute (approx) walk from Sendai or from International Centre subway station. Part of the walk is uphill that some will find strenuous. There is a Sendai Loople bus service that stops at the castle. The Castle ruins are really just the footprint of the castle. There are remains of castle wall gates, with information boards (in Japanese and English), that you pass walking to the castle location. There are food venues at the summit - didn't try them. Summit can be crisp and windy in winter (very chilly, with snow settled in various places in shadow).
