Tennoji Zoo, Osaka

2.9
#2 of 7 in Zoos & Aquariums in Osaka Prefecture
Only the third zoo to open in Japan, Tennoji Zoo shelters 230 species spread across an expanse of 11 hectares (27 acres). Established in 1915, the zoo and the adjacent "Savannah Zones" create an illusion that both carnivorous and herbivorous animals share the same enclosure. The animal park also includes a reptile house, hippo and rhino house, and an exhibit called the "Asian Tropical Rainforest Zone." • There are few kinds of animals, but because there are a lot of individual animals respectively, it does not get tired even if it stays all day long. If you go on weekdays, you can look around slowly with few people. Because there are few roofs, I do not recommend going on a rainy day. There are some kiwis that are rare in Japan, so why don't you visit them once?

  • A lot of the animals looked to be living in small, cramped conditions. I was especially concerned about the bears including the polar bear who were showing signs of distress.  more »

  • Small zoo, but if you are will little children it is the perfect size (less area to walk!). Some of their main animals have been re-homed for various reasons (ex. Koala was flown out for a breeding program) or passed away (ex. Elephant). Very clean and lots of areas to sit down and eat plus vendors for food and drink. Plentiful washrooms as well.
  • It's a very old zoo with lots of interesting history. Renovations and additions are taking place, but many areas still feel dated. The zoo is not full by any means. Some of the animals appeared agitated. It's tough to see some of them kept in such confined spaces. Only 500 yen.
