The Chikugo River Lift Bridge (筑後川昇開橋, Chikugo-gawa shōkaikyō) is a vertical lift railway bridge across the Chikugo River in Kyūshū, Japan. It was completed in 1935. The bridge has a total length of 507.2 metres (1,664 ft), with a moveable span of 24.2 metres (79 ft) long and a vertical rise of 23 metres (75 ft). It links Ōkawa, Fukuoka with Morodomi, Saga, and used to be part of the Saga Railway Line. When that line ceased operation in 1987 the bridge was closed to traffic. In 1996 it was reopened for pedestrians in response to requests from the public.

A precision miniature model of the bridge, which describes its structure, was exhibited at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne (1937). Today this model is on display at the Railway Museum (Saitama).

The bridge was designated an Important Cultural Property in 2003, and in 2007 it was included in the Mechanical Engineering Heritage as item No. 23.

  • It was windy and cold when we visited the bridge. We went on Feb. 11th 2018. The view was really great and there were few visitors.  more »

  • Great place for local vegetables is located on the west side of the river. The bridge is unique and beautiful. A must stop along a historic tour.
  • Chikugo River Uplift Bridge (formerly the Chikugo River Bridge on the National Railways Saga Line) is a movable iron bridge built with the construction of the former JNR Saga Line in 1935, and was recognized as a mechanical heritage in 2007. The former JNR Saga Line connects Okawa City in Fukuoka Prefecture with Saga City, Saga Prefecture, and each of them has an observation park that retains the image of the former JNR Saga Line. The view of the Chikugo River Upkaibridge is beautiful to see the full view of the bridge from a little upstream or downstream, and the appearance with the sunset against the background is wonderful. You can also walk across the bridge, and you can not only look from the outside, but also look up inward. Although the staff was out of time, they raised the bridge specially, but the huge tower eliminated its decorativeness and overwhelmed what he saw with structures that could be said to be a martial bone.
