Taiyuimbyo Shrine, Nikko

4.6
Part of the Shrines and Temples of Nikko World Heritage Site, Taiyuimbyo Shrine houses the mausoleum of Tokugawa Iemitsu, a 17th-century shogun famous for helping Japan resist European colonial influences. Administered by Rinno-ji Temple, the shrine is one of the Three Golden Temples of Japan, and features a mixture of Shinto and Buddhist influences. Gold and black with red framing, a number of exquisitely built and decorated rooms have designated as national treasures, with large ceiling paintings of dragons adding to their mystique. Statues of Deva kings guard the compound, with stone lamps placed around the entire complex. The mausoleum sits 30-40 minutes by foot from Tobu and Nikko stations. • The Taiyuimbyo Shrine is not on the same area as the others, so it's less crowded. However, it's very relaxed and nice. It's worth spending some more time in Nikko to see this one.  more »
