Bandai Bridge, Niigata

#3 of 120 in Things to do in Niigata
Bridge · Tourist Spot
After having undergone three incarnations since the Meiji period, today's version of Bandai Bridge dates from 1929 and stands as a symbol of Niigata both for its Showa architecture and historical importance. As the first bridge across the Shinano River, it brought about greater commerce between communities on the opposite banks. After the destruction of the first two wooden versions, the third features a reinforced concrete design. (A nearby shopping district displays materials from the first two in an underground passage.) Embark on a boat tour along the river, or simply find a nice place on the banks to sit down on the grace under Japanese cherry blossoms and enjoy the view.
