Step into the cave and admire the vivid colors of Udo Shrine, a Shinto shrine. Legend has it that Japan's mythical first emperor, Jimmu, was born in the cave, which was subseqently dedicated to him. Notice the breast-shaped rocks on the cave wall, said to have been suckled by the young emperor and nourished him for the challenges to come. Sipping the water that drips from the rocks has long been thought to bring benefits for pregnant women and couples trying to have a child. Step out onto the terrace by the cave's entrance to see the ocean and a rugged stretch of coastline, fit for an emperor. Using our custom trip planner, Nichinan attractions like Udo Shrine can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

Udo Shrine reviews
-
One of the most beautiful shrine in Japan, seaside with the red shrine. You have to walk around 15 to 20 minutes from the car park to the shrine. It’s definitely worth to do that. The myth or stories behind the shrine are interesting too, better do some research or study before you go to there.

Incredible shrine built into a cliff wall. Informational signs around the temple are exclusively in Japanese, so if you want to learn more about the temple while you're there be sure to be with someone who can read Japanese or settle with Google Translate. Be sure to pat the 撫でうさぎ ("Patting Bun") near the back of the cave for good luck!
