Yakushi-ji Temple, Nara

#6 of 99 in Historic Sites in Nara
World heritage site · Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
See one of Japan's oldest and most storied Buddhist temples at Yakushi-ji Temple, part of the World Heritage Site of historical monuments in ancient Nara. The Yakushi Nyorai, known as the Medicine Buddha, is the main object of veneration, and represents one of the first Buddhist deities to arrive in the country from China. Established in 680 CE, the temple complex has seen destruction by fires throughout the ages, although its original towering pagoda, completed in 730, remains standing--the object of much admiration for its design and artistry.
