Mt. Wakakusa, Nara

#1 of 10 in Nature in Nara
Mountain · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Surround yourself in evergreen scenery and immerse yourself in nature at Mt. Wakakusa. Almost completely covered in grass, the 342 m (1,122 ft) high hill provides you with a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for a picnic while you enjoy views over the nearby town. As you follow man-made trails around the mountain, you will come across deer who call the local area home. Once a year, a festival in which locals burn the dead grass of the hill takes place, a tradition that supposedly originated in 1760. According to legend, it was the result of a boundary dispute between two temples. Take a look at our Nara trip itinerary planning tool to schedule your visit to Mt. Wakakusa and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • There is a gravel track all the way to the top, takes maybe three quarters of an hour moderate walking pace, not strenuous. Decent view from the top.  more »
  • On the 4th Saturday of January, there is a special celebration where the Mount Wakakusa is set on fire at the end of a long ceremony in several steps. Very interesting!  more »
  • Amazing view of the town, but lots of steps to get there. Consider saving some wafers for the cute deer at the top. 150yen entrance fee, gate closes at 5pm.
