Yachimun Street, Naha

#5 of 258 in Things to do in Naha
Instead of all the neon and modern Japanese style, Yachimun Street offers something completely different: a limestone-paved road full of ceramic studios, stores, and galleries. The street came to prominence 300 years ago, when the Ryukyu administration decided to gather all the potters in one place for a singular purpose--to produce ceramic jars. As you explore the calm neighborhood, visit the onsite pottery museum to learn about the history of this area. Observe local artisans as they pay homage to their heritage and make works of art on a daily basis. If you love the craft, you can also join the pottery-making classes to hone your skills with professional guidance. • I dropped the rice bowl I bought before and broke it, so I thought if there was the same thing. Unfortunately, I didn't have a new one and a favorite coffee cup.

  • The more you look at it, the more fun it becomes! Warm and gentle vessel! This time I drew a picture on a picture plate! I'm looking forward to the completion! There are many historical potteries and new shops on this street! And there are plenty of cafes and a fun day! Absolutely recommended here! There are a lot of coin parking nearby! International Street is also within walking distance! While it is in that rough place, the calming street is a must-see!

  • Really great place. Many shops have completely different styles so there is a lot of options for anyone who wants to buy some pottery. Very convenient having all the stores close to each other. Definitely bring enough time because there is a lot to see
  • This quaint Okinawan street housed many shops which showcase the craftsmanship in pottery, glassware and brass/bronze ware. It’s a nice place to explore and shows a different side of the busy city, which tends to have more shopping and eating to do. These photos are taken of individual shops which are different in character and style. A treat for anyone interested in pottery!
