Aoshima Island, Miyazaki

Meet the friendly feline inhabitants of Aoshima Island, an island known for its large population of cats. In fact, cats outnumber humans by a ratio of around 6:1 on the island, a fact that becomes immediately clear when arriving on the twice-daily ferry into the harbor. The island, 30 minutes by boat from Ehime prefecture, was home to around 900 people in 1945. Cats were brought to the island to help the fishermen catch mice that were getting onto their boats, and the population has grown steadily ever since. Make Aoshima Island a centerpiece of your Miyazaki vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Miyazaki day trip tool.

  • About 10mins walk to the island from parking lot. There was a signboard outside in japanese where google translated that if your car is small size then you can drive to the island and park outside temple which we do see several cars there too. But to be on a safe side, think it is better park outside.
