Admire twelve Zodiac animal carvings on the wall of Godaido, a temple founded by a Tendai monk in 828 CE. The site depicts five wisdom kings of Japanese Buddhism. The temple opens its door only once every 33 years to display its sacred statues (it was last opened in 2006), so don't plan to go inside. Sitting on the small island, the free site has easy access by three walking bridges and features a souvenir shop nearby. Make Godaido a centerpiece of your Matsushima-machi vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Matsushima-machi trip itinerary maker app.

If in Matsushima this is in the center of town connected by two bright red bridges, it is easy to get to and free so it is usually crowded. Still do it. more »
Godaido is a lovely, small temple on a rock in the sea, founded in 807. While it’s not very large or impressive, it is peaceful and beautiful. And free!
This is a national treasure site situated just next to the jetty when you alight from the Matsushima excursion ferry ride. No entrance fee is required. The red bridges connect you to the temple and you'll have to walk on the planks as the bridges are not fully covered. Apparently it closes at 5pm. You'll get a good view of the bay from there. Highly recommended!
