Yasaka Shrine, Kyoto

#16 of 684 in Historic Sites in Kyoto
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Historic Site
Founded in 656, Yasaka Shrine remains one of Kyoto's most popular shrines, especially appealing to tourists during the cherry blossom season. View the honden (the most sacred area of a Shinto shrine) and the oratory within the main hall before checking out the performance stage lined with hundreds of lanterns. In early April, when cherry blossoms are in bloom, the temple is especially busy, as it is during the summer festival of Gion Matsuri in July. • It would be nice to take a walk with your lover when the lights are on.
  • Beautiful Shrine located at the very end of the traditional Gion district. Although not big, the atmosphere and appearance rivals that of the other bigger shrines in Kyoto. I highly recommend a visit at night when there are less people around and the shrine is lit up.
