Sanzen-in Temple, Kyoto

4.6
Bask in the elegant halls of Sanzen-in Temple, a Tendai school temple of imperial lineage, founded in 804 CE. As you enter its front gate, pass the series of connected temple buildings until you reach the kyakuden, or guest hall. Observe the displayed works of Japanese calligraphy and paintings on sliding doors, and proceed towards the traditional garden with a small pond and a hill. In the shinden, or main hall, observe the three statues of Buddhist deities, as well as a view of the entire estate covered in maple and cedar trees. Stop on Ojo Gokuraku-in Hall, which holds a statue of Amida Buddha, the temple's most prized treasure. To visit Sanzen-in Temple and other attractions in Kyoto, use our Kyoto online holiday planner .

  • I rented a car on the middle of the three consecutive holidays in November and went to Sanzenin and Mt. Hiei. I was with nearly 70 parents, so the rental car was the best way to get there. The green of moss and trees is very beautiful, and there is a size, and it is easy to go around slowly. I felt that I was able to heal and power. The Jizo-san is also cute and relaxed.

  • As a song, "one woman tired of love" is OK. It is OK even if the person who is tired mentally and physically is busy with work every day. Why don't you restore your vitality around Sanzenin? If possible, it is better to avoid the autumn leaves season. It is true that the autumn leaves may be beautiful, but it will be ruined when there are more people. I went there on October 20th, but there were not many people, so I was able to look around slowly. The greenery is beautiful and the air is clearcompared with the city center.

  • Absolutely beautiful, quiet temple, especially in fall—I also went during winter, and it was still beautiful but not quite as stunning.
  • Absolutely beautiful. The atmosphere here feels so peaceful. Momiji is gorgeous too. Honestly this place is so much nicer than a lot of crowded places in the city.
