Keage Incline, Kyoto

4.4
Marvel at a complex work of engineering at Keage Incline, a fin-de-siècle rail system hoisting boats up and down a steep hill. Starting from a picturesque red brick aqueduct, this abandoned two-way rail line runs underneath a canopy of cherry trees, making for a surprisingly romantic hike. Check out a system of bridges, tunnels, locks, and canals disappearing into the mountain, then get closer to inspect the mounted boats and huge, many-toothed wheels. Don't miss the museum at the bottom of the hill, which explains the story of this modern Japanese marvel. Located on the Kyoto side of Lake Biwako Canal, you can reach the incline by alighting at Keage Station. • The enchanting forest, aged old railway tracks, the statue of the great civil engineer, the hydroelectric dam, the old red brick tunnel - all these lent an almost magical peek into the past. A wonderful trek with great historical pieces of the past coupled with a serene and peaceful ambience. Great works of historical significance displayed through nature. It was a beautiful walkabout and memorable because of the scenery n history of the places. From forested area to an old hydroelectric dam then on to an open park and finally down through a brick tunnel to finally arrive at the main road. An interesting and recommended trek!
  • There are a lot of awesome view points around there!! Particularly You should visit here on Later March or April because there are a great number of cherry blossom along the old rail of train! If you stay in Kyoto in spring, you should visit here and must enjoy very "japan-wise" beautiful view.
