Hosenin, Kyoto

#48 of 687 in Historic Sites in Kyoto
Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Religious Site
For lovers of intricately designed gardens, Hosenin, a Buddhist temple backed by scenic mountains, provides a real treat. Enjoy a view of the frame garden while a monk prepares a complimentary cup of tea and a cake for you. Take a close-up view of a 700-year-old pine tree and admire a pond garden from several perspectives. You can stroll through a moss garden, a rock garden, and a bamboo grove, all the while looking out over the valley. Built in 1012 CE, this small, intimate temple is one of the five “bloody temples,” so named thanks to the bloodstained tiles on its ceiling. Wear warm clothing, especially socks, as you'll have to remove your shoes to enter. With our international travel planner, Kyoto attractions like Hosenin can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • This little gem is next to Sanzen-in temple, so if you’re in the area, don’t miss it. The most beautiful garden I’ve ever seen. The pictures just don’t do the justice!!!  more »
