Constructed in 1593, Kongobu-ji Temple forms part of World Heritage Site and boasts one of the largest rock gardens in Japan. Take your shoes off and walk through the Ohiroma Room, used for important rituals and ceremonies, then sip some hot tea in the large tatami hall. From there, you can access the sprawling garden, featuring a centerpiece of 140 granite stones arranged in the shape of two dragons. Finish your visit in the kitchen, where enormous kamado stoves regularly cook for up to 2,000 people.   • Kongōbu-ji temple is quite big, with a nice entrance. It has several halls and alleys. It's free and it's one of Koyasan's highlights. When we were there, it was a rainy and cloudy day so we couldn't....  more »
