Miho Museum, Koka

4.5
Designed by world-renowned architect I. M. Pei, Miho Museum houses a collection of rare and ancient artwork nestled in the mountains. Commissioned by wealthy philanthropist (and religious leader) Mihoko Koyama for her private collection, the building largely lies underground--carved into the rocky mountainside and covered with a steel-and-glass roof. Enter by traversing an unusual cable bridge and walking through a shining tunnel. Inside, observe a variety of artifacts from Asia and the Western world. Our Koka itinerary site makes visiting Miho Museum and other Koka attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • It took less than two hours by car from Kameoka. There is also the middle of the consecutive holidays, and driving at high speed. It is in the back of the mountain and access is a little bad, but I wanted to see it early because word of mouth was good. When we arrived, we bought a ticket (1,100 yen) and walked through the tunnel for about seven minutes to get to the desired location. Several people also had a bus to get on. It is recommended that the person who wants to take a picture in the tunnel walk. Bizen ware from the Momoyama period was exhibited in the museum.

  • A great day trip from Kyoto. It's a bit long to reach there (1h30 from Kyoto Station) but worth it. Clear direction on their website for access. The bus costs 820¥ one way. The entrance for college student is 760¥.
  • Fun museum. The food was good, and the tofu was really creamy. I think the nicest part of the museum is the architecture. FYI, there is a video playing in the museum that will tell you about the history of the museum.
