Shosenkyo, Kofu

4.2
Take a hike along Shosenkyo, a narrow gorge rich in natural sights, from interesting rock formations to tall, leafy trees. Set within a wider national park, the gorge features a mountain river and a tall waterfall, visible from the main hiking route that follows the gorge. Take in sights of interestingly shaped rocks, all carved by nature into shapes that locals have mythologized and named after animals they resemble. The surrounding forested mountains offer seasonal displays of color, making the gorge and its natural backdrop particularly popular with photographers. • I went there when the autumn leaves started. The road from Kofu is surprisingly narrow on the way, so I'm worried about whether it's really right on this road. First of all, I wanted to take the ropeway and looked for a parking lot. There are a lot of parking lots, but I wonder if I can park many things that are dedicated to ryokans and shops. It might not be true, but there seemed to be a person who stopped without worrying. I parked at the public free parking lot, but I waited in line for about 15 minutes. The ropeway was crowded, but i was able to get on immediately because there were more temporary flights. The view from the top of the mountain was very nice and blessed with the weather. There are few safety fences due to the consideration on the landscape, and it is a little dangerous. Especially, small children and the elderly did not slip or it was harassed. The promenade of the valley was well maintained and easy to walk, and the walk while looking at the brave rocky mountain was very comfortable.

  • I came to search for autumn leaves at the beginning of November. If you want to enjoy Shosenkyo, it is recommended to stop your car at the municipal parking lot of Nagatobashi and approach it from the promenade. However, it takes some time (about 4 hours round trip). At first, strange rocks and strange stones continue, and then you arrive at the superb view of Kakuenpobo. If you climb further, you will arrive at the ropeway from The Stone Gate and the 100 Best Waterfalls in Japan. The middle of November is the best time to see the autumn leaves.

  • Great hike. Not too long and doable during the summer. I imagine it being even better during autumn.
  • A quite and beautiful place, interesting rocks and streams, around the waterfalls there are many good shops and restaurant. A worthy and relaxing experience.
