#4 of 52 in Museums in Osaka
Find masterpieces of East Asian ceramics at Osaka Shiritsu Toyo Toji Museum, with over 6,000 items mainly from Korea and China. The three-story museum boasts one of the finest ceramics collections in the world, focusing on fine craftsmanship rather than the history of ceramics. Viewed in naturally lit galleries, these pieces belong to national treasures of three countries: ancient Korea, China, and Japan. An informative video explains how this treasure was unearthed, and how it's been preserved and displayed. After visiting the museum, stop for a drink in the tea salon. • I have visited many times since the opening. It is a blissful space for pottery lovers because it is lined with excellent ceramics in China and Korea, and is displayed quietly. How to show ceramics can also be seen in natural light in Chinese celadon. Because the permanent exhibition is the main, I can always see my favorite ceramics, so I am healed.

  • Dedicated to the preservation as well as presentation of pottery, this relatively new (1982) museum offers a carefully curated collection of ceramic history. View the permanent collection of more than...  more »

  • A real gem in Osaka. If you are a resident save for a hot muggy afternoon when outdoor activity is impossible. If you are a tourist just go visit. A small space very well designed. Great natural light tunnels above some of the displays (you need to work to see these). Japanese, Chinese and Korean as well as special shows (currently Finnish modern). Enjoy the building and setting too.
  • Interesting if you have a deep love of ceramics. However, I felt that the collection was on the smaller size compared to other museums and for the price of the museum (there are also so many other free and affordable things you can do in the city). As I had a lot of time in the city, I did not mind checking it out but for people pressed for time (and $) I would say this is something you could skip (unless of course you have a passion for ceramics...)
