Experience a wealth of Zen gardens and culture at the sprawling, walled complex of Daitoku-ji Temple. Founded in 1319, it suffered great damage in the Onin War (1467-1477), but was successfully repaired and now stands as one of the 14 branches of the Rinzai school of Japanese Zen. Across the 23 ha (57 ac) complex, you can see 24 subtemples, along with several other buildings. Many of the temples here have their own Zen gardens hidden behind the walls, serving as peaceful spots for quiet reflection or meditation. An overwhelming experience. I've seen many images of zen gardens, but nothing comes even close to physically being there and observing them with your own eyes! Most of the temples aren't very crowded, and the admission prices are pretty much symbolic. A must visit place if you are in Kyoto!
A very quite and peaceful place to visit.
