Kitain, Kawagoe

#2 of 27 in Historic Sites in Kawagoe
Religious Site · Landmark
Visit the revered Buddhist temple of Kitain, and admire the 540 stone statues of Buddha's disciples, each wearing its own facial expression. A typical Zen style encloses the shrine, whose foundations date to the 8th century, giving the complex a tranquil and spiritual ambiance. One of the interesting points consists of rooms from the original Edo castle, dismantled and reassembled here. These include a kitchen, toilets, a bathroom, and the room where the third Tokugawa shogun was born. Contemplate in the prayer building and walk through the peaceful cemetery. A small onsite shop sells snacks and amulets. Discover how to plan a Kawagoe trip in just a few steps with Inspirock's itinerary builder.
