Meigetsuin (Hydrangea Temple), Kamakura

4.2
At Meigetsuin (Hydrangea Temple), you'll have the opportunity to see vibrant blooms of hydrangeas and iris, along with a traditional Japanese Zen garden. Founded in 1160, it was originally built by a son in honor of his father, who had died in a power struggle between Taira and Minamoto clans. Overtime, it grew into a larger Buddhist temple complex, but this was diminished during the Meiji period, until only the original temple was left. Look out for the unusual circular window in the temple, which frames its inner garden in a pleasing manner. Bear in mind that the hydrangeas bloom during the rainy season in June, and that the inner garden of irises only opens twice a year for two weeks at a time: in June and again in late November - early December when the autumnal colors are in full swing. • Of course, i was very concerned about the limited time of the garden after the garden though it was not to mention seeing the hydrangea which is famous as Akizuki in blue. I really wanted to enter once. It was after the rain, and it was beautiful in it, too. There were many people who watched hydrangea outside, but I thought that the person who entered the garden after it was not immediately. It costs 500 yen extra, but i think it's worth going and seeing because it will be open to the public in accordance with the best time of the season.

  • The season of hydrangea was coming to an end in July, the first time the rainy season has not yetReiwa opened, but the green of the garden with a very airy feeling makes me feel very comfortable when rain is also good.

  • This quiet temple comes alive in June because of its hydrangea flowers. If I have the chance to see just one place for hydrangea, I would choose this place. I came early but still have to queue 10 minutes before the opening time. Once it was openend people rushed in to take the photo of the climbing stair with purple hydrangea on both sides. I missed the chance! Should come even earlier next time.
  • Quite a beautiful temple with picturesque paths and many hidden bunny rabbit statues. This place is famous for its hydrangea flowers but by no means does that cover this great location. I have been to this temple twice and I actually prefer the place in November over the spring. This is a temple that you can take your time in and find all the little things most people won't notice. Hidden frogs and rabbits and turtles carved and hidden around the Temple grounds. There is an attractive bridge and the paths loop around each other. Main hall Is attractive and the traditional rock garden was a pleasant surprise. There is a even a small bamboo grove.
