Museum of the Meiji Restoration, Kagoshima

4.0
#1 of 17 in Museums in Kagoshima
Hop on a streetcar or a 1920s bus at Museum of the Meiji Restoration, a large open-air museum with many pavilions offering an insight into the unique story of Japan’s modernization. Hourly audio-visual presentations, colorfully dressed mannequins, and carefully restored interiors recreate the Meiji-period atmosphere of 1868. Several well-preserved buildings that were moved here, as well galleries showing sword techniques and animatronic Japanese reformers, set this well-organized and detailed museum apart from others. Located by the Kotsuki River, the museum sits nine minutes by foot from Kagoshima Chuo railway station, or three minutes from the nearest tram stop, Takamibashi. Museum of the Meiji Restoration is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Kagoshima Edition.

  • We came on a rainy day since not many options, but its very near Kagoshima chuo station Aeon. Beautiful bridge. Friendly staff who lent me an English audio tablet that explained the history of Meiji r...  more »
  • The first floor introduces the great men of the nostalgia education and the restoration. We recommend a screening of a drama at the Restoration Hall on the first floor of the basement. There are two books: "The Road to restoration" and "Satsuma Student, To the West". I watched "Satsuma Student, West" in relation to time, but it was a drama that reproduced the state of the Satsuma clan, which sent international students to The United Kingdom at the end of the Edo period.

  • The movie and animatronic presentation have a simulation English translation. It made the history come to life. There is also a smattering of English on some of the exhibits, and the iPad guide. One of the better museums, imho.
  • Very interesting and interactive museum. It is very cheap (only 300 yen) and you can easily download an app to have an English language audio guide. Knowing that Kagoshima has such an history makes your trip more unique because there are status and monuments all over the city that you would be able to understand.
