Buried Shrine Gate, Kagoshima

3.8
Imagine the sheer force of nature at Buried Shrine Gate, an entrance to a Shinto temple buried 2 m (6 ft) under volcanic ash for over a century. The powerful eruption of Mount Sakura in 1914 catapulted ash and pumice 7 km (4.5 mi) into the air, creating a 2 m (6.6 ft) high ash deposit in a single night, and leaving only 1 m (3.3 ft) of the gate still visible above the ground. The lava also covered an entire village of 687 houses, whose roofs stayed visible above the ground. • The torii is only buried. There is a parking lot, but there is nothing else, and there is an elementary school and a shrine when going beyond the buried torii and going to the back.

  • Torii can be seen as soon as it is, and you can feel the threat of a major eruption up close. There is a paid parking lot in front of the free municipal parking lot. I stopped at the paid parking lot without noticing it at all, but there was a free parking lot when I walked, so if I noticed it a little earlier... I thought. I was also aware that there were many objects like torii on the road along the way.
