Buried Shrine Gate, Kagoshima

3.8
Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Imagine the sheer force of nature at Buried Shrine Gate, an entrance to a Shinto temple buried 2 m (6 ft) under volcanic ash for over a century. The powerful eruption of Mount Sakura in 1914 catapulted ash and pumice 7 km (4.5 mi) into the air, creating a 2 m (6.6 ft) high ash deposit in a single night, and leaving only 1 m (3.3 ft) of the gate still visible above the ground. The lava also covered an entire village of 687 houses, whose roofs stayed visible above the ground.
