Shuzen-ji Temple, Izu

Explore the Zen Buddhist Shuzen-ji Temple, the historic scene of death and tragedy in the Minamoto family. Reputedly founded by revered religious personality Kobo Daishi (who also supposedly created the township's hot springs by striking rocks with his stick) in 807 CE, the site became infamous after witnessing the suicide and assassination of two generations of Minamoto family patriarchs, around the turn of the 13th century. Nowadays, the site is thankfully a lot more peaceful. You can take part in meditation classes on Tuesdays from 9 am, and relax in the peaceful grounds. Look out for a picturesque bamboo forest nearby. Make Shuzen-ji Temple part of your personalized Izu itinerary using our Izu trip itinerary builder app .

  • Shuzenji Temple is a historic temple. Even though it is also a name for the area, there are few people who actually go to the temple to enter the hot springs? It is small, but it is a pretty good spot because it has a taste.

  • It is shuzenji temple where the Kamakura Shogun and the second shogun Genyori family were confined and died of non-work. You can see the ancient faces associated with Yoriie, which became famous for the play "Shuzenji Monogatari" by Okamoto Kido, and the light-free Wakahara Esoteric Buddhism, which was promoted by Masako Hojo. You can visit the precincts for free.
