Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, Imabari

4.5
The Kurushima-Kaikyō Bridge, which connects the island of Ōshima to the main part of Shikoku, is the world's longest suspension bridge structure and was completed in 1999. The bridge is part of the Shimanami Kaidō, an expressway that spans a series of islands and connects Hiroshima Prefecture in Honshū to Ehime Prefecture in Shikoku. The bridge and the expressway were both conceived by the Honshū-Shikoku Bridge Project.
The Kurushima-Kaikyō Bridge consists of three successive suspension bridges with six towers and four anchorages. There is a shared anchorage that joins each suspension bridge to the next. Its construction is similar to the western portion of San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge which is two successive suspension bridges with four towers and one shared anchorage. The bridge's total length of 4015m, is just a little longer than the total length of the two tower Akashi Kaikyō Bridge, which is 3911m.
First Kurushima-Kaikyō Bridge, main span 600m, ranks 63rd largest two tower suspension bridge Second Kurushima-Kaikyō Bridge, main span 1020m, ranks 26th largest Third Kurushima-Kaikyō Bridge, main span 1030m, ranks 25th largest

  • I was asked on a company trip in November 2018. It is a famous place where the three great tides of Japan flow under the bridge, but you can also cross the bridge by renting a bicycle up. It was a route under the bridge this time, but you can feel the wonder of nature spewing out from under the sea at the rapid tide of The Island.

  • When i return to the Kurishima Kaikyo Bridge and the countryside which can be seen from a house in the country, i always see this bridge from the sea side and the observatory. It is a bridge that I want you to see from both the sea side and the mountain side.

  • steep climb on 🚴🏻. One of the longest bridges in Japan with great views of imabari and the surrounding sea and islands
  • Driving across was a pretty cool experience, the bridge was not only spectacular but was so easy to drive across, take care though I did see an unmarked police car pull someone over, plenty of photos and videos can be taken by passengers whilst driving over this marvellous structure.
