Mt. Kaimondake, Ibusuki

4.5
Must see · Mountain · Nature / Park
Dominating the surrounding scenery, Mt. Kaimondake offers hiking opportunities and panoramic views from the top of its volcanic cone. This dormant volcano is occasionally called "Satsuma Fuji" due to its resemblance to Mt. Fuji. Only one path marked with frequent rest stops leads to the summit, winding its way through a dense forest and over rocky terrain. Watch your step on the loose pumice stones and climb with the help of ropes over the trickiest sections. The long ascent will be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the coastline, the lake, and the outlying mountains. On a very clear day, Yakushima Island can also be seen from the top. Wear sturdy boots, sunglasses, a cap, and bring plenty of water. A visit to Mt. Kaimondake represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Ibusuki holiday planner to plot your vacation.

  • I wanted to take my time climbing Mt. Kaimondake because I’m almost recovered from my knee injury, so I took the 9.10am bus from Ibusuki to Kaimon Station. While walking to the trail head on my way...  more »
  • It takes around 2-3 hours to get to the top. You need to have basic hiking equipment to get to the top. Not too crowded since you have to walk a little and the view is spectacular.  more »

  • Beautiful area, always great for a hike. Make sure to inform yourself in the visitor center about the situation i.e. which areas are safe to walk to due to volcanic activities. We loved it so much and had a great day out. Also bring enough food and water and apply sun protection and wear a heat. Also bring your camera in order to take plenty of great photos.
  • About 4-5 hours are needed to go up and down with lunch break at the top. Don't forget to bring a mosquito repellent with you because there are many mosquitos at the first part. You should bring 2L water too. There is no water stream on the track.
