A train ride across the marshes will take you to Kushiroshitsugen National Park, Japan’s largest undeveloped wetland area, spreading across 269 sq km (104 sq mi). After crossing many steel bridges and wooden planks, you'll reach a strangely shaped metal area--the Kushiro marsh observatory--giving you a panoramic view of the expanse of wetland. Famous for its population of red-crested white cranes, a symbol of Japan, the marsh habitat provides the only wild home for this species, which nearly became extinct early in the 20th century. You can see spotted deer and birds of prey as you hike through the national park, as well as steam-engine spotting or taking a canoe ride.
