Miyajima Public Aquarium
At Miyajima Public Aquarium, see 13,000 creatures of 350 distinct species from the Seto-inland Sea. Imported animals like otters, penguins, and sea lions perform entertaining shows, and feeding times of various residents also draw a crowd--particularly the manta rays and turtles. In the first floor, kids can interact with starfish, sea cucumbers, and other gentle creatures in the tidal pool. Highlights include an area dedicated to Kabuto-gani, a horseshoe crab that has not changed for a million years. Information boards are provided in English, and the aquarium has all the necessary facilities, including a cafeteria, restrooms, and picnic area. A visit to Miyajima Public Aquarium represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Hatsukaichi vacation website to plot your vacation.

I found the Miyajima Aquarium to be a great way to spend a couple of hours. It is a little ways from the ferry terminal but there are signs guided you to its location. Like most aquariums, it is on... more »

A nice aquarium with a nice set up. I also saw a march of the penguins, feeding of the penguins and a sea lion show. I do think the price was a bit high compared to other fantastic aquariums I've... more »

Very surprising little aquarium. It has some really well put together exhibits and some fantastic interactive exhibits; you can pet penguins and otters. They also have a pool of doctor fish that you can stick your hands and feet in and they eat all of your dead skin off. This was my personal highlight and I thoroughly recommend it. Make sure you catch a seal show, as they are well worth it. The seals do tricks and the trainers crack jokes, the quality was surprising for such a small aquarium.

Great aquarium. Compared to the Osaka one, this might feel a bit small. But I tend to say that the variety is still on par with the larger ones. Entry was not expensive, only 1400 yen. Every 30 Minutes an event is planned, that you can attend to. They all don't take that long, maybe 10~15 minutes. With that you can still spend multiple hours at this aquarium! They also have some Doctor Fish available for everyone to use. I know that in Europe the use of fish in spa's is frowned upon. So this is the place if you want to try it out. (although I recommend reading up on it first as people are prone to getting infections as a result of the fish eating away)
