Daishoin Temple, Hatsukaichi

Part of a World Heritage Site on holy Mount Misen, Daishoin Temple commands reverence as one of the most prestigious temple complexes in West Japan. Nested at the foot of a thickly forested mountain on Itsukushima Island, the location offers panoramic views of the bay. One of the oldest temples in Itsukushima, the head shrine of Shingon Buddhism has been important since the ninth century. Ring the bell the run a gauntlet of 500 statues, which depict disciples with knitted red and white caps, each of whom has a peculiar facial expression.   • This place was incredible! A must go! We only had a half hour to explore but I wish we went here first and spent less time at Tori Gate.
