The Hakone Open-Air Museum Reviews
We just loved our time at the The Hakone Open-Air Museum something that I certainly wasn't expecting, the exhibits are weird but interesting and the gardens just beautiful. The sculptures exquisite so... more »
more »There were a number of sculptures on display in the garden, where the green grass was surrounded by green trees. I'm not interested in sculpture, but when I walked in such a place and watched it, I was surprised to receive it in a pretty good way. Admission fee (felt a little high) but it's worth it!
What a wonderful experience to walk through the grounds of the open air museum on a perfect winters day. There is something for everyone, from the youngest to the oldest. Children are catered for by having access to two dedicated play areas which are unique. You may not have a positive feeling about every exhibit you observe but overall there is something for everyone. Make sure you go to the too of the tower with the beautiful stained glass interior. Dip your feet in the steaming foot pool and of course there is the Picasso exhibition which is exquisite. There are plenty of places to eat and relax and gift shops aplenty. The museum was my Hakone highlight.
This is a very unique experience in Japan. If you can really appreciate art, then this is the place for you! There is a great open-air walk through a park like atmosphere with tons of artwork to see. For me personally, I am not a huge fan of art. If you feel the same, then I would probably skip this. There is tons of other things to do and see in Japan. This is a great stop for art lovers, but not for everyone.
