Admire the history and artistry of Tochoji Temple, a Shingon Buddhist temple known for its large Buddha statue. At 10.8 m (35.4 ft) tall, the seated Buddha represents one of the largest statues of its kind in the country, and the intricately carved ring of light that acts as the backdrop deserves to be studied and admired, with various images of Buddha carved into the wood. Founded in 806 CE by Kukai, a major force in the spread of Buddhism throughout Japan, the temple complex includes an impressive pagoda, a main hall, and a cemetery housing memorials to several notable feudal lords. Make Tochoji Temple a centerpiece of your Fukuoka vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Fukuoka day trip planner.
Tochoji Temple reviews
Incredible complex of temples in the heart of Fukuoka. Beautiful gardens and magical experience. Highly recommend if you’re around.
Sweet little temple in Hakata with a large wooden buddha on the first floor. Don't forget to walk through the tunnel behind the buddha. On the complex there is pagoda and a place to get a temple stamp, next door there is a shop selling shrine sanctioned crackers and it's only a 15 minute walk from Hakata Station.
