Shoka Village School, Hagi

#1 of 92 in Things to do in Hagi
Historic Site · Landmark
See where one of the Meji Restoration heroes, Yoshida Shoin, taught Japanese students of every social status at Shoka Village School. The tiny wooden and tiled roof school began as a single 13 sq m (139 sq ft) classroom with eight tatami floors. Eventually the students helped and added an additional room and 105 tatami floors. The celebrated teacher discussed the future of the nation here, inspiring many of his followers and students to become reformers of modern Japan. Inside, see the statue dedicated to the great mentor and photographs of the renowned reformers. Take the guesswork out of planning a Hagi vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.
