Shoin Shrine, Hagi

#2 of 92 in Things to do in Hagi
Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Explore the political history memorialized at Shoin Shrine, a site dedicated to social activist and samurai Yoshida Shoin. After a failed attempt on a government official's life, Shoin was sentenced to death in 1859. However, his ideals and teachings are considered to be instrumental in bringing about the Meiji restoration, and he is remembered fondly as a patriot who gave his life for his country. In the grounds, you can visit a couple of museums telling the hero's story through models and artifacts, as well as Shoin's preserved classroom and home. Unfortunately, neither of the museums have much English language information available. Plan to see Shoin Shrine and other attractions that appeal to you using our Hagi road trip app.
