Daigo-ji Temple, Fushimi

4.1
See a historic place of worship at Daigo-ji Temple, a UNESCO-protected Shingon Buddhist temple. Founded in 874 CE, the temple's name translates as "ghee," used metaphorically here to conjure images of the "crème de la crème" of Buddhist thought. Admire the artistry and architecture of the temple's five-story pagoda, constructed in 951 CE, representing the oldest surviving building in the city and officially listed as one of the National Treasures of Japan. The temple has gained protection as part of a wider area of ancient monuments. Plan to see Daigo-ji Temple and other attractions that appeal to you using our Kyoto trip planner .

  • Kyoto is the city with 1,600 Temples but each has its own unique feature. This is not one of the least since it is a World Heritage Site. The site is huge and consists of 18 buildings scattered in nature, many of which are classified as Japan's national treasures, including the 5-storey Pagoda. It takes time if you want to see it all! In any case, you have to take your time to let yourself be penetrated by this place so peaceful and just contemplating. Depending on the season of the year, the place is asked by a thousand colors ranging from pale yellow to vermilion red, a splendour. We were not so lucky but the site remains beautiful by its very structure. To get there, it's very simple, there is a metro station that bears the same name (Daigo). You can't see everything when you're in Kyoto (again I highly recommend the free Arakumachi app, equivalent of the City Planner, which gives the whole ride (train/metro/bus) to Kyoto from where you are, with all the chain of means to use, INDISPENSABLE when visiting the city and its surroundings, you save a lot of time).

  • On November 3, 2019, I went to the shrine for the purpose of the seal of the 33 places in the west country. Arrived at the temple around 13:30, and at the admissions office near Sanpoin, "Would you like to wait for one hour now?" I was asked. Because It was during the consecutive holidays, I was prepared, and because it was within the assumption if it was one hour, I paid a high-season admission fee [1500 yen] high in the 33 places of the west country, and went toward Kannon-do where the nagosho is located. Then, it is certainly quite a line in Kannon-do. I started to line up for an hour, but waiting but not coming, and in the end, it was after 16:00 after two and a half hours of receiving your seal. Because it was this season, the sun was already getting dark, and neither Sanhoin nor Reihokan could see anything else. It is [a total of 1800 yen] of [admission fee 1500 yen + seal 300 yen] only to get the seal. Unusual high admission fee. And "one hour" is a detarame information. Moreover, because it was quite cold on this day, I caught a cold. It is just a villainous tourist temple that tells the name of the Buddha. I will never go again.
