Religious Site · Tourist Spot
A picturesque port town at the southern end of Fukuyama city, Tomo no Ura offers scenic views and an insight into Japan’s age of sails. Traditional dark wooden facades, a lovely 11 m (33 ft) tall Edo-period stone lighthouse, cobblestone steps, and a historic pier and old docks all preserve the Edo atmosphere. Famous for the production of "homeishu," medical liquor said to induce longevity, the port has a museum dedicated to it. You can also visit four temples and a shrine, as well as museum of history and folklore. Tomo Port sits 30 minutes by bus from Fukuyama.
